Mandarinfish and Dragonets are mostly bottom dwellers. They often like to bury themselves sand or flit from rock to rock in search of the small animals they like to feed upon.

The Mandarinfish and Dragonet diet consists mainly of small crustaceans and other organisms that live among the debris on the seabed. Usually it is best to put these fish only into well-seasoned aquariums with plenty of microorganisms and other animals found in live rock and live sand. They can be fed supplements of rotifers and live brine.

Males can usually be distinguished from females by their long dorsal and anal fin extensions and their brighter colors. In keeping them, they should be kept singly or in pairs, never put two male mandarinfish in the same aquarium.
